Being grateful can benefit your life in so many ways, learn about the top benefits here and how to get started with gratitude.

Adding gratitude to your day is one of the simplest ways to improve your life. You don’t need any special tools and it only need take 1-2 minutes to accomplish.

There is a plethora of scientific research showing that gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness.

It helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their mental health and well-being, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.

In short, gratitude is good for our bodies, our minds, and our relationships.

WHAT is gratitude?

We think we know, but do we really?

As children we are taught to thank others when they give us a gift or do something nice for us, but how many times do we offer thanks for all the good small things that happen to us each day?

Do we really know how to be grateful?

There are many definitions of gratitude but the truth is it takes a conscious effort to truly experience gratitude.

When we say ‘thank you’ we need to actually feel it. To be thankful. Not just say it by rote. Then it becomes a positive emotion, a conscious feeling, when you are thankful for something either tangible or not.

It’s about much more than good manners!

Gratitude involves recognition of the positive things in your life and how they affect you. This can be simply acknowledging a beautiful flower in a garden or the feeling of thanks that comes from recovering from a serious illness.

Gratitude is important!

So WHY is gratitude important?

Because there are many benefits of regularly practicing and expressing gratitude. Emotional benefits, health benefits and social too. It can even improve our career.

The scientifically proven benefits include improved:

· Relationships

· Sleep

· Physical health

· Psychological health

· Empathy

· Self-esteem

· Mental resilience

HOW do we get started with practicing gratitude?

There are several ways to add a regular gratitude practice so your routine might look quite different to mine but we will both receive the benefits whilst implementing it in a way that works for each of us.

You can practice gratitude in different ways, including:

  • gratitude exercises, such as 3 things you are grateful for daily journaling
  • paying attention to the little things in life, like the birds in the trees
  • telling someone you’re grateful for them or for something they did, even if it was a long time ago
  • doing something kind for someone in your life to express your gratitude
  • meditating on the positive aspects of your life
  • giving thanks through prayer

As you can see being grateful is one of the easier habits to implement. It can take less than 15 minutes (2-3 if you are really pushed). It has pretty much zero set-up costs and can be done anywhere.

Simply fill in a notebook or journal or even use an app on your phone to write down three things you’re grateful for.

It doesn’t need to be from that day, and it can be anything from the smell of freshly cut grass, to what you had for dinner—anything that makes you feel thankful.

If you’re looking to start practicing gratitude regularly, there are plenty of useful exercises to help you integrate it into your daily life.
